The skirmisher Close Air Support module is meant to fulfill a role that no current fighter in the fleet is capable of doing. Designed for planetary use only and as a close air support gunship, the Skirmisher is equipped with four type U+ phaser repeaters and additional maneuvering thrusters. Effectively, the Skirmisher is a heavy gunship with weapons meant to support forces on the ground, whether they be marines or starfleet security officers. As the fighter is meant for planetary use, it is not equipped with warp nacelles. Two additional fusion reactors were built into the module to provide additonal power for the pulse repeaters and point defense arrays, increasing the fighter's staying time and effectiveness while conducting its missions.

A primary concern for most marines and soldiers on the field is adequate support when they encounter heavy weapons emplacements or superior numbered enemy forces. As most fighters in the fleet are meant as fast movers, this takes away from a more precise and dedicated role for the fighters to fill. The skirmisher was meant to fill this role. Primarily using anti-grav technology, the Skirmisher is equipped with ten additional thrusters that can work in tandem for increased thrust and speed or individually to give the pilot finer control of his fighter's position. The added agility given to the fighter by the addition of these thrusters means that the fighter can dart around combat environments, giving it the ability to gain superior positioning when supporting ground troops.

The phaser repeaters themselves are a new technology involving downsizing the already small U+ pulse phaser cannons. Rather than a single plasma conduit firing, the repeaters are equipped with four rotating conduits, allowing the energy to be cycled through each. The design was meant to reduce the wear on an individual plasma conduit thereby giving it a longer life span for prolonged use. Redesigned and improved power cells were designed and integrated into the pulse repeater, also increasing the life span of the weapon during use. While each repeater would fire a pulse that was less powerful than a standard U+ the ability to provide increased fire down range and their life time extension increased their effectiveness, especially against planetary targets.

Finally, the point defense system is an attempt to provide the skirmisher module with an added defensive capability against emplaced or mobile mounted anti-fighter weapons. Essentially, it is meant to target fast moving approaching missiles and shoot them down with a blast of phaser fire. The two point defense arrays are placed on the dorsal and ventral sides of the skirmisher module, providing a 360 degree defensive screen against enemy projectiles. Much like any form of defensive technology, the point defense can be overwhelmed, but is effective in many situations.
