The Defiant class is a strong ship, equipped only for short-range assignments it is typically used for convoy escort duties or as an attack ship during fleet engagements. It is also commonly found as a garrison ship for outposts and starbases.
The Defiant development programme began in 2365, after Starfleet's first encounter with the Borg. Now aware of a large threat the Federation Council finally allowed Starfleet to go ahead with a true modern warship design, going away from the focus on large, luxurious cruisers that packed little punch compared to size.
The Defiant was to change that, it was means to be a small, tough, quickly to build vessel that packed as much fire power as was possible for a ship her size. As a result, Starfleet design engineers departed radically from the typical designs for a starship, the nacelles, traditionally weak spots that enemy vessels liked to target, and built the nacelles closer to the main body of the ship, well-protected under a thick layer of ablative armour.
This greatly enhanced the survivability of the Defiant, though it also created problems. Heavy shielding had to be installed between the nacelles and the habitable parts of the ship to screen the crew from the intense radiation the nacelles produce. Similarly, the structural stress caused by the nacelles was so great that the ship was limited to a top speed of a mere warp 9.5, otherwise the stress would tear the ship apart.
Pulse phaser cannons, specifically designed for incorporation with the Defiant class, were fitted to the bow of the ship. To give the ship some coverage to the top rear a small type X phaser array was added behind the bridge module. The supreme manoeuvrability of the Defiant class allowed the vessel to be effective, though, as it could get itself into firing position with relative ease. With two pulse fire torpedo tubes in front and one at aft the Defiant was one of the most powerful warships then in existence when fielded in 2372.
Numerous problems were encountered with the ship, it was overpowered and overgunned for the stabilisation systems then used. A team of field engineers were able to make corrections, however, and these were then included with other ships of the class. The Defiant class proved highly successful in service during the Dominion war, and the small crew and relatively low amount of resources needed to build a ship packing this punch persuaded a close majority in the Federation Council to finally give the go-ahead to allow Starfleet to build this desperately needed ship type in full series production.
The Defiant class is now a common sight when escorting convoys of ships through or near high-risk areas. Their short range makes them less than ideal to fulfil cruiser roles, however. Thy are often employed as garrison ships of outposts and starbases, as this allows the starbase and sector command force projection throughout the sector, with the Defiant regularly returning to its home base for resupply.
