The Cheyenne class was designed as a successor to the problem-ridden Constellation class. Starfleet's experiment with a four nacelle configuration had failed to achieve the expected results with the Constellation class and engineers believed they had worked out the kinks and were ready to try again.
For the Cheyenne class a lot of the technology designed for the Galaxy family was included, the saucer section is the same as for the Galaxy, only scaled-down in size. As such, the Cheyenne only mounts four type IX phaser arrays, one emitter class lower than the Galaxy due to the size and power requirements of the system, but has the same torpedo firepower, with one forward and one aft facing burst fire launcher.
This gives the Cheyenne a surprising punch for her size in long-range engagements, however as the enemy closes to a range where torpedoes become ineffective the Cheyenne class is easily out-gunned. In fleet engagements the Cheyenne class needs to be supported by other craft, therefore.
Early field tests with the nacelle configuration proved indeed that the engineers had overcome the inherent problems in the Constellation class, however it also showed that the power consumption rate of the drive configuration at greater speeds was much higher than with a two nacelle configuration, causing Starfleet to re-design the warp engines completely.
With the four nacelles in place it was decided to only run two of them at a time, which allowed the Cheyenne longer duration of emergency velocity as one pair of nacelles could cool down while the other took over. Getting a bad cost-use ratio out of the design Starfleet decided to abandon the four nacelle configuration entirely.
Class production continued at a moderate pace, the ship itself was a solid design and a capable destroyer. 47 ships were built in total and the class remains in service. One was lost against the Borg, nine against the Dominion.
Cheyenne class vessels can be found primarily in core areas of the Federation and often assist in the defence of outposts, starbases and colonies.
