The general design of the Klingon Bird of Prey has been around since the 2280s, however, the B'rel class today only shares its outward configuration with the earlier model. It's a bit larger and therefore a different class of vessel. The B'rel is one of the smallest independently operating warships in known space, possessing superior manoeuvrability to any other starship class.
Lightly armed and armoured, the B'rel's strength lies in its agility at sublight speeds and in its cloaking device. Wily commanders can use this to a devastating effect. The B'rel is so common and so well-liked by Klingon warriors that one such ship even served as the flagship for the most important Klingon military commander during the Dominion war, General Martok, even though larger and stronger vessels were available.
While the weapons array of the B'rel is not exactly impressive in overall terms, most of her weapons (all except the rear torpedo launcher) face forward and the wing-mounted pulse disrupter cannons deliver about the same punch as the Defiant's pulse phasers (though the Defiant mounts four).
The B'rel has proven to be especially effective against Jem'Hadar fighters. Unless locked in formation during fleet engagements the highly manoeuvrable craft can avoid Jem'Hadar suicide runs and bring itself into a good firing position with a more than fair chance of surviving a one-on-one encounter. Unlike the Defiant, which is about the same size, the B'rel is unable to withstand as much incoming fire and is quickly disabled once taking hits, as evidenced by one B'rel blown to pieces after but a single hit from a Galor's main forward phaser.
B'rel class vessels have frequently been seen in the service of Klingon noble houses, used for conducting private rather than official business, and have also been sold outside the Klingon Empire much like their larger K'Vort class counterparts.
One unusual feature of the B'rel class are its movable wings. When in flight mode these wings face downward, aligning the pulse disrupter cannons with the primary direction of movement. When folded upwards the B'rel can land on a planetary surface. This makes the B'rel an ideal planetary defence craft as it can be serviced even on a planet without orbital docking facilities.
