The Galor class is the mainstay of the Cardassian fleet. In the 2360s the Galor was considered the best ship in the Cardassian arsenal, however, she performed very poorly against Nebula and Galaxy class starships, then Starfleet's biggest guns. This is hardly surprising, considering the Cardassians are several decades behind the Federation in their technological development, and considering the Galor class is a significantly smaller vessel.

Nevertheless, the Galor class is a sturdy and reliable design. As Cardassian shielding technology is not as advanced as that of most other major powers in the region the Cardassians compensated by building a very strong hull. The warp nacelles of the Galor class are incorporated into the primary hull, a move that greatly increases the durability of the design but reduces engine efficiency and top speed (a problem Starfleet encountered with the Defiant class as well).

The Galor class was first fielded in the 2330s, the type one then about twice as strong as previous Cardassian vessels. In the twenty years to come numerous improvements were added to the class, with the officially designated type two subclass fielded in 2349. Prolonged conflict with the Federation led to more advances between 2355 and 2365, with the type three incorporating torpedo launchers into the design as the most significant modification.

The Galor class was superseded by the Keldon class in 2371, which took many concepts and indeed most of its design from the Galor. However, the Galor remains the mainstay of the Cardassian fleet. The class suffered heavily during the wars the Cardassians fought in the 2370s. While the class remains in production as the type four model, which includes technological upgrades received during Cardassia's brief membership with the Dominion, plans are to discontinue production of the class after reaching a number of seven hundred operational vessels, estimated to happen by 2393.

The Galor class type four in service today is a much more reliable craft than earlier types. It is still not up to par with larger vessels of other powers, but used in groups of three to five, mutually supportive, they give a good account of themselves. The Galor's primary armament, a forward facing heavy phaser bank, is over-proportionately powerful for a ship of this size, giving the Galor an impressive offensive punch. Without it, the vessel is not much of a threat at all.
