Developed during the 2360s and fielded in 2371, the Keldon class was meant to improve on many of the shortcomings of the Galor class, some thirty years older. Nevertheless, the Keldon class shares almost the same hull geometry, with the exception of two fins added to the tail and a large, boxy construction attached to the spine of the vessel. Most of its internal systems are based on the Galor class, type three.

This extra space allows the Keldon to carry more crew and equipment than the Galor. The Keldon has received a third torpedo launcher and four additional disrupter banks. Its main armament, a forward heavy phaser bank, has also been improved in its power output. The weapon is, however, prone to overloading, which creates a high power burst of destructive energy but renders the weapon useless for a significant amount of time. Sometimes this is done on purpose, though usually the crew takes steps aimed at avoiding it, since without its main weapon the Keldon is weak and easily defeated.

When Cardassia joined the Dominion two years later, the number of Keldons in service was very low. Therefore, the more numerous Galor class was given priority for upgrades introduced with advanced Dominion technology. It was only in late 2374 that technological enhancements made to the Galor began to trickle down to the Keldon. Only after a period of military occupation and reconstruction, keeping the Cardassians out of interstellar affairs for the second half of the 2370s, did the Keldon upgrades resume.

Currently, the Keldon class is still in production and a run of 500 vessels is planned to bring the Cardassian military back to prominence and to re-establish Cardassia as a major player in interstellar politics.
