• The shuttle bay uses a racked storage and launch system for its fighters. These racks line the outer walls of the Shuttlebay with runabouts and shuttles situated on the main level. Fighters are always stored in such a way so that they can be easily launched at a moment’s notice.
• With the immense size of the Ascension, the designers found that the traditional turbolift system was insufficient, even with all the modern technology in both the car and the control systems. While the Ascension-class does incorporate a turbolift system, the cars being larger than the standard cars and have fold-down chairs along the walls to allow for seating, this class also has two tram systems running the length of the ship.
• The Ascension also has a built in site-to-site transporter system, completely isolated from all external transporter systems. Running on opti-cables rather than wireless transmission, this system is used to travel from any of the ship to another.
• Equipped with fully integrated holographic systems on every deck allows for complete access by the ships EMH programs and for holo-conferencing between the ship’s crew, as well as holographic communications.
• The Ascension class is not equipped with the typical Captain’s yacht. Instead the designers incorporated a deployable, “Aerowing” style vessel on the dorsal side of the ship’s saucer section.
• While given a standard refit and resupply schedule the Ascension class is capable of being completely self sustaining, making it the ideal deep space exploration vessel.
Designed in early 2345, the Ascension-class was meant to be the next flagship of Starfleet. However, due to the sheer size of the vessel, the power requirements, and the prohibitive costs of building it, the design was shelved.
In 2380, after the Dominion War, the Borg attacks on Federation space, and other minor skirmishes, the Advanced Starship Design Bureau pulled the design for the Ascension-class off the shelves and had a closer look at it. They started to update the design, utilizing lessons learned on previous projects. The designers also looked at the hull and shields, which at the time were inadequate for a capital ship such as the Ascension. They added an additional layer of hull to make it triple-layered, thickened the ablative armor, incorporated a regenerative shield system (similar to the one equipped on the Sovereign-class), enhanced the shield generators to produce more shield power by increasing the available power to the shield generators.
Next they looked at the power systems which required a drastic upgrade to accommodate not only the vessels size and basic power needs, but also to be able to incorporate all of the modern weaponry. There was also a requirement for a higher warp factor. The designers and the Starfleet Corps of Engineers worked tirelessly on this problem for months, experimenting with various types of warp cores, even upgrading them to produce more power, but no design proved to be enough to power such a large ship. The designers decided to get radical. Thus far, the tests of the Excalibur-class with its dual warp core system had proven quite successful. They ran a simulation of with four core configuration in the same fashion and were quite pleased with the results they achieved. With one pair of warp cores running vertically and a second pair running horizontally on Deck 36 the ship had enough power to operate all its systems at 100% with energy to spare. For long term missions in order to help conserve resources and prevent unnecessary wear and tear on the cores they only need to operate at 75% to fully power the vessel. They also installed massive fusion reactors to power the impulse systems and provide secondary power for the ship, which can power the shields at 50% reactor capacity.
Initial simulations proved that the design was viable but it was somewhat lacking in tactical situations because it could not make effective use of its torpedoes. This sent the designers back to the drawing board to try and find a way to make the ship more agile so it could bring its torpedoes to bear more easily. One designer, after looking over the Sovereign-class and its Mark-I torpedo turret, decided that these systems could be brought to the Ascension. He had to scale down the launchers to make them more compact and, in the end, he had a design that pivoted along the three axis, but could only fire a two-torpedo salvo. In simulations, with these new turrets placed on strategic points on the saucer and along the neck of the vessel, the combat effectiveness of the Ascension increased drastically.
With the USS Ascension nearly complete the keel of her sister ship the USS Phoenix was laid down. However construction on the Phoenix was halted after several problems were discovered during flight on the Ascension. The first problem to surface was that the standard EPS grid used just couldn’t handle the raw power produced by the ships 4-Core configuration. A new, more robust, system was developed and construction was delayed as the upgrades were installed.
An even bigger issue was found with the warp propulsion systems. The problem being that the current design of the warp nacelles were only able to get the massive ship up to warp 3. Limited to warp 3 the massive ship would be ineffective and if a solution couldn’t be found the project would certainly be cancelled. The designers went back to the drawing board. Several different nacelle designs and warp field configurations were tested, but nothing would produce the speeds needed to make the ship viable. Using intelligence gathered from the Dominion war, specifically the information gathered on the propulsion systems for the Dominion’s Planetary Assault Craft, the designers at Utopia Planitia were finally able to come up with a solution. They developed a ‘Double Bubble’ warp field. By creating a dual warp field, one warp field within another, the mass of the ship was reduced exponentially and would allow for much higher warp speeds and would allow Starfleet to construct a true capital ship rivaling the Romulans, Cardassians, and the Dominion. With the power and propulsion system problems solved the USS Ascension was modified, construction resumed on the USS Phoenix, and construction began on the next three vessels.
